Traditional Vegan dishes from Mallorca

Often when we talk about traditional dishes from Mallorca we think about meat, fish and dairy products. Things like Frito Mallorquin, Sobrassada, Arroz brut or caracoles (snails) spring to mind.  However, did you know there are some traditional Mallorcan dishes which are originally 100% plant-based? We’ve also found some dishes traditionally made with animal products now in various locations serving vegan in Mallorca. With so many traditional vegan Mallorca dishes now available, no one needs to miss out on all the fun!

Trampo

Trampo is a real simple vegetable dish made from chopped onions, tomatoes and green peppers. Topped off with some delicious Mallorcan olive oil and salt – y ya esta! In the summer these 3 vegetables can be found in abundance making Trampo an easy-to-make side dish – perfect for BBQs! Coca de Trampo is a pastry dish which you may also have heard of, made from the same vegetables on traditional pastry.

Tumbet

Tumbet is a vegetable based dish made from onions, aubergines, courgettes, potatoes, tomato sauce, red pepper and garlic. Like most dishes, don’t forget to add some Mallorcan salt and olive oil for taste. It’s one of the most popular dishes in Mallorca and 100% vegan!

Pamboli

Pa amb oli literally translates from Mallorquin as ‘ Bread and oil’. Enjoy it at any time of the day: breakfast, lunch or dinner and they’re a really simple meal made from fresh local products. Find yourself some ‘Pan moreno’ – traditional brown bread, ‘tomate ramallet’ – a specific type of tomato from Mallorca which you can rub right onto the bread, and don’t forget the garlic, salt and olive oil! And you’re ready to go! You can order Pamboli in most restaurants, either on it’s own, or with jamon or cheese.

Traditional Mallorcan dishes: turned vegan!

Frito Malloquin Vegano

One of our favourite dishes: Frito Mallorquin – ‘Fried Mallorcan’ is made from potatoes, peppers, onion and usually animal liver. However, you can create your own Frito Mallorquin vegano with homemade vegetables. My mother in law makes a delicious one and It tastes just as good as (or even better) than the real thing.

Ensaimadas Veganas

Ensaimadas are the most common traditional Mallorcan sweet. A pastry topped with icing sugar goes down smoothly with fresh coffee in the morning or afternoon tea. Ensaimadas, like Coca de Trampo, are also originally made using animal fat. But don’t fret, some places in Mallorca such as Es Ginebro will make it without animal fat on request.

Coca de Trampo Vegano

coca de trampo

Coca de Trampo: a pastry topped with onions, tomatos and peppers (as mentioned earlier) but often made using saim (animal fat), so check with the shop or bakery. Nowadays you can find a few places who make Coca de Trampo without saim meaning it’s 100% vegan. The vegan restaurant Sabores de sandra does a tasty vegan Coca de Trampo available to order – ideal for events or parties. I have to say Sandra’s food is exquisite so totally recommend!

Sobrassada

Last but not least, the most popular cured meat in Mallorca now has a 100% vegan option! The ones we’ve tried are usually made from paprika and vegetable, and bought from various markets or shops in the island. It may not taste exactly the same but it’s certainly a good replica. Try BioSano who sell vegan sobrasada made from dates, shiitake mushrooms and tomatoes.
