You’ve probably heard of the US based company Beyond Meat who have been working tirelessly to perfect the taste of meat, without actually using any kind of animal products. Beyond Meat now sell their vegan meat-alternatives ‘beyond burgers’ as well as sausages and other products in various shops and restaurants in Mallorca. Since November 2019 International fast food giant Burger king released their new vegetarian burger The Rebel Whopper in Spain. Although is normally comes with mayonnaise but you can just request it without and it’s vegan.
We’re excited to have two new, convenient vegan burgers on offer which taste like real meat. Sometimes you just want to get your hands on a greasy burger without having to consume any animal products, and now you can. It’s great to see two multinational companies selling their vegan burgers in multiple outlets across Europe including in Mallorca.
Taste contest: Beyond burger vs Burger King Rebel Whopper
In terms of flavour, we have to say Beyond burger definitely has a moorish taste to it and reminds us of McDonald-style products. The Rebel Whopper has a hint of meat flavour but perhaps is not quite as juicy as beyond meat. However, we think Burger King’s option tastes good with the extras they include with the burger: tomato, pickle, onion, lettuce, ketchup and a tasty bread bun to bind it all together. Beyond burger just includes the patty, so the real quality of the whole meal depends on who prepares it for you!
Burger King’s Rebel Whopper burger is a slightly thinner patty but with the extra toppings, it feels like just enough. You’d normally order the menu which includes chips (fries) and a drink. (Update, Burger King Spain now serves vegan nuggets which are also delicious!). Beyond burger is a much larger patty and more filling, especially if you add your own burger bun and extras. We say Beyond burger wins this round.
- 98% of ingredients in Beyond meat burger are water, pea protein isolate, canola oil and coconut oil.
- Burger King Rebel whopper is made mostly from soya, wheat, vegetable oil, herbs and onion.
Price: Beyond burger vs Burger King’s Rebel Whopper
Burger king Rebel Whopper menu starts from 7.50€ in Spain which includes fries and a drink. It’s the same price as a normal meat Whopper menu (well done Burger King)! The price of Beyond burger price depends where you buy it from. But you can get 2 patties in El Corte Inglés for 7€. If you eat it in a restaurant, it purely depends on the price they want to charge. It can be between 10€ and 15€ and would usually come with chips, but not a drink. Burger king wins round 2!
Are they vegan burgers?
Burger King is an international fast-food giant known for their meat burgers. Some people are complaining (and even suing) Burger King, claiming The Rebel Whopper is not 100% vegan because the burger is cooked in the same grill as animal products. What do you think?
As Beyond meat is based in the US, products need to be shipped worldwide so we can enjoy them in Mallorca and around the world. This is not the most environmentally friendly way to eat vegan food and is increasing our C02 emissions.
Which vegan burger do you prefer? Do you think we should buy from these international companies?
