Summer is just around the corner and the weather is getting warmer. If, like many vegan’s at this time of year, you’re wondering how you can survive your next BBQ with non-vegans – we’ve prepared some ideas for you. Just because you don’t eat meat, doesn’t mean you need to miss out on all the fun, and even less so, the taste!
Vegan BBQ skewers
These are a non-brainer for any bbq, whether vegan or not. You can choose your favourite veggies, brush them in some seasoning to get the full flavour and grill them for around 10 minutes on each side. Our personal favourite is courgette, red and yellow peppers, mushrooms and red onions, with a pinch of salt, pepper, lemon juice and olive oil. Sometimes we add some cherry tomatoes but be careful as they often cook faster and can fall apart.
Veggie burgers and sausages
Nowadays you can find vegan burgers and sausages in most supermarkets, one of our personal favourites is the ‘Next Level burger‘ from Lidl, Spain. They normally cost around 2 euros and will cook in just 5 minutes on each side! They even taste like meat, so don’t forget to take them to your next BBQ, even the non-vegans will love them.
Grilled corn on the cob
Corn on the cob is a cheap, easy BBQ side dish which is tasty and healthy at the same time. Simply glaze it in a mix of vegetable broth, salt and paprika, then wrap it in some foil (this will prevent burning and help the flavours combine) and grill for 20-30 minutes. Delicious!
Barbecued sweet potato
Sweet potato is another easy but mouth-wateringly delicious bbq treat. We recommend to chop the sweet potato lengthways into thin slices in order to get that tasty charcoal flavour all over. Before grilling, dip them into lemon juice, olive oil, thyme and salt and then barbecue for 15-20 minutes turning them over once. Yum!
BBQ tofu
Vegans have a love-hate relationship with tofu – it’s an easy alternative to meat but can sometimes come off as bland and dull. But this BBQ tofu recipe is anything but that! Be sure to start by pressing the tofu for 30mins between a plate and a book (use a paper towel in the middle). Then cut up the tofu into medium sized chunks and marinate them in bbq sauce for 1 hour to get the full flavour (bottled bbq sauces from most supermarkets is vegan), you can simply add the sauce in a shallow bowl with the tofu. Finally add a drop on olive oil and grill it on the bbq for 30-40 minutes until crispy on the outside, and you’re ready to go!
